Berthoud Main Street Commemorative Tile Design ContestThe 2007 Tile Design has been selected and the winning artist and design will be announced soon. LOCAL ARTIST CREATES COLLECTABLE COMMEMORATIVE TILES OF BERTHOUDBerthoud Main Street Program's Promotions Committee unveils two Berthoud bas-relief commemorative tiles on Thursday, November 3, from 4 to 7 pm, at Mountain Avenue Pottery located at 315 Mountain Avenue in Berthoud. The collectable art tiles depict images and icons specific to the small town known as the "Garden Spot." The 2005 tile measures 8 ¼ by 4 ½ inches and prominently features a sunflower, trees, and our well-known mountain views. For 2006, the tile shows a Victorian home front, trees, and sky. It measures a finished 5 ¾ by 5 ½ inches. Local artist and resident Gregory Peck designed, pressed, and glazed the tiles as a way to depict features of the town in a medium not generally used for commemoration. He has been working on the design elements and execution of the color and glazing process for two months. "I created 2005 tiles by beginning with an intaglio plate. Let me explain: an intaglio print is one whose image is printed from a recessed design etched or carved into the surface of a plate. The ink lies below the surface of the plate and is transferred to the paper under pressure. The printed lines, then, stand in relief on the paper. Because I am using clay, I make the intaglio with a variety of interesting and found items. Then I create a mould from that, and the I press the clay into that mould." In the firing process, the color and glaze naturally sits heavier and darker in the recesses, which creates interesting shadowing and one-of-a-kind art pieces. Peck hand-sculpted the 2006 Victorian home tile. Berthoud residents can use the tiles for display in or out of doors, and incorporate them with other tiles. Each tile year will be a limited edition. Presentation of the new tiles is held in conjunction with the committee's First Thursdays Shop Late campaign. Tiles will be available for sale at Mountain Avenue Pottery, Habitat for Humanity Thrift Store, and Berthoud Greenway Florist. Each tile is $25, with all proceeds benefiting the Berthoud Main Street Program. Berthoud's Main Street Program makes first Thursdays Shop Late possible. Behind Berthoud's Main Street Program is a volunteer-driven, tile-firing, downtown-promoting non-profit organization that encourages the community's involvement with its many activities.
